PTCL Recently launched EvDO Services under the brand Broadband on the Go. This comes in direct competition with Worldcall EvDO services launched a little while back.

Though PTCL Service is only offering PCMCIA* based devices for usage (Shutting of most of the desktop users) and a single package at the moment, but its availability in all three major cities (Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad ) plus an option to get a connection from city and ability to use in any will be attractive for a lot of user. for package details please read on.

Currently PTCL is offering only one package with a standard rate (the CSR did not have info regarding the exact connectivity speed). On their site they claim data rates upto 3 Mb/sec which is a tall claim and can only be verified after people have purchased it. Charges for subscription are as follows.

There are two subscription modes, one in which you buy the PCMCIA card and other in which you rent it.

Packages

Package 1

You will get the PCMCIA Device in this package and unlimited download limit. speed is standard for now i.e there are not different packages for speed/bandwidth

Subscription/Installation Charges 4000 Rs (for PCMCIA Card)
Monthly Subscription Charges 2000 Rs

Package 2

PCMCIA Device will be property of PTCL and you pay the rental. Unlimited download limit. speed is standard for now i.e there are not different packages for speed/bandwidth

Subscription/Installation Charges None
Monthly Subscription Charges 2500 Rs

The plus points.

  • Good package rates

at 2000/2500 which ever you choose you are getting speed on the upwards of 1Mbps plus unlimited down loads in comparison worldcall package of 1Mbps (Only available in Karachi) costs 2500 and you have to buy the device separately

  • Billing in phone bill

This alone will be a feature worth mentioning as it saves a lot of hassle of going to some sale point to pay for the connection and recharge. with PTCL online billing now available for PTCL Bill plus integration with most banking system a customer can pay bill with a lot of convenience.

  • Roaming

The availability of service in 3 major cities plus the ability to roam with the service will be very attractive for people on the go, it will allow you to stay in touch where ever you go.

The negatives

  • Device

The PCMCIA card will be a problem for a lot of users specially the ones wanting to use this in their desktop, plus the inability to easily use the same connection across different systems will be a problem, i hope PTCL comes with the USB Device soon. Also there is no Wifi version or router type device meaning people wanting to share a connection at home will have a problem, Worldcall provides a wifi router device for 6000 Rs.

  • Single Package

There are no low priced packages the minimum being the 2000 Rs if you buy the PCMCIA Card, in comparison worldcall has 1200 Rs and 1800 Rs for 256kbps and 512kbps packages respectively allowing people with lower budgets to get this service.

Conclusion

this has an ability to become an attractive service specially for business community if they execute it well the rates and other options are good only major issue being the PCMCIA Device.

PTCL doesnot want to do bussiness. Therefore doesnot have any concept of target marketing. The existing PTCL sevice is very poor then how the PTCL expect that customer will be attracted by this new product. Secondly the tarrif is also very hight. Cheap packages are already available in market. Now i understand how the PTCL is fails to capture the market!!

I agree with Adnan. PTCL continues to launch these products without properly introducing them or ensuring superior service standards. Their customer service is miserably pathetic and no complain ever gets resolved. I wanted to get a PTCL DSl connection and even after TWO months of complaining they still hadn’t sent their guy to fix everything up. I cancelled the order and went for a LINK DSL student package, which was cheaper and was installed in five days so that I could at least study for my damn exams. This is just another ploy to capture innocent customers and take their money!!

PTCL has very good infrastructure. But they don’t get market due to improper marketing and unavailiabity of complete package. This package is very expensive.

The device is expensive and failed to live up to expectations. The only reason I bought it and chose it over Wateen and PTCL DSL was because it was the only option here in Rawalpindi for a simple USB dongle device requiring no extra power supply and unlimited Internet access. It is only good if you live near one of their towers because often it runs at the slow CDMA speed and occasionally it fails altogether and I have to go up onto the roof to get the signal strength – this is not what I anticipated paying Rs 2,000 per month for. Be aware:

    (1) 3.1 Mbps is only the theoretical maximum. They say the ‘average speed’ is between 300 and 600 Kbps but my range is usually between 0 and 250 Kbps.
    (2) If they give you a promise to call back within 24 hours, what this really means is that they can’t handle the problem and would rather forget about it.
    (3) In my situation, I am using this on Mac OS 10.6. The drivers they supply and even the ‘latest’ ones on their website are useless. It took me several ’rounds’ of being referred before getting hold of the software for 10.6. But there is another problem for Mac users. If you choose prepaid (in my case I was advised this by one of their customer service representatives) there is no way to recharge your account or check your balance because there is no ’soft phone’ as illustrated in their literature. Moreover, you can’t change from prepaid to postpaid either.

The bottom line: expensive device, high monthly charges, likely signal problems, low and variable speeds so not a continuous broadband service, unreliable customer service, false promises, not Mac friendly
